Nephin Whiskey supporting the Arts
Cllr. Michael Holmes, Cathaoirleach Mayo County Council was on hand to launch the Westport Festival of Chamber Music in Holy Trinity Church, Westport on Sunday evening.
The evening featured a piano and violin performance by Elizabeth Cooney and Finghin Collins who delighted the 50 assembled guests with Sonatas by Schubert and Elba, followed by a rousing piece by a lesser known Polish Composer, Szymanowski.
The festival runs from Friday September 11th to Sunday 13th with the opening in Westport House on the Friday night featuring 6 Irish and international musicians and Soprano Sylvia O'Brien. There are only a handful of tickets left, which can be purchased on the classicallinks.ie website.
The festival is in its third year and is now sponsored by Nephin Whiskey. Dr. Paul Davis, Managing Director of Nephin Whiskey explained their interest in being involved, “These days people can instantly download an mp3 file of any classical music piece, but we still value the authenticity of watching a live performance given by incredibly talented musicians who have practiced their art for decades and we understand the importance of passing this gift onto future generations.”
Davis continued “In the same way, Nephin are creating an authentic Whiskey to compete in an industry dominated by the mass produced brands of the multinational corporations. We are growing barley locally, reviving the traditions of peating malt using local turf and passing the dying art of coopering onto the next generation.”
This is something which the company, who are finalising the construction of the Nephin distillery in Lahardane, aim to repeat according to Dr. Davis, “We’re delighted to be involved in the Westport Festival and will continue to support classical and traditional music in Mayo in the coming years.”
